How We Research

Updated on

Every guide on Tables Kitchen starts with one question: will this piece fit your home and the way you use it? For a dining table, that means room size, seating, clearances and how the table serves your daily needs.

Here is how we answer it.

1. We start with the room and the way you use it

A large table can crowd a small dining nook. A counter stool at the wrong height can make an island uncomfortable to use.

We check table dimensions and shape, chair and stool heights, legroom, seating capacity, walkways and clearance around doors and other furniture. For compact rooms, benches, carts and built-in seating, we consider how the footprint affects movement and storage.

2. We compare specs and features

We look at the details makers list: dimensions, materials, weight limits, finishes, adjustment options, storage, assembly needs and what comes in the box.

Makers describe their products in their own words, so we name the brand for every claim. For linens and protectors, we check listed size, fit, care instructions and surface compatibility. We also note the warranty terms the maker lists.

3. We look at buyer feedback

We read what buyers report after using a product. We look for patterns, like tables that wobble, finishes that mark easily, stools that feel unstable, difficult assembly or storage that is less useful than expected.

One angry review doesn't sink a product. A pattern does.

4. We score each product

Our score weighs specs, features and buyer feedback against what you're shopping for. A compact table may suit a small-space guide, while a larger table may be a better fit for family meals.

Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.

5. We keep pages up to date

Products change, and some disappear from stores. Makers sell similar tables and seating under close model names, so we check each model name and what comes in the box, and we only link new units.

We skip unknown brands with no track record and any product with a known recall. When we update a guide, the "Updated on" date at the top changes with it.

What our picks are not

Our picks are research, not hands-on tests. We don't claim to have used every product we cover.

We focus on product information and fit. For questions about room measurements, check the product dimensions and measure your space before you buy.
